Football CASC Receives £4,832 Gift Aid Cheque
Presented by Club Charity & Unity Trust Bank

Club Charity & Unity Trust Bank were pleased to hand over their first Gift Aid Cheque in Wales to Cwmbran Celtic AFC in August 2008.

The club began working closely (in December 2007) with Club Charity to modernise their club fundraising methods and to maximise their potential as a CASC. The result has made a major impact on the club’s finances. Club Charity was able to secure an additional £3,500 worth of rate relief for the club and the club has also raised in excess of £12,000 of donations online. Added to all this the club has now banked nearly £5,000 in Gift Aid!

The Gift Aid presentation took place at the Welsh Sports Institute (Sophia Gardens) in Cardiff. The club’s manager Malcolm Jarrett said at the event:

“I must admit I had a sceptical committee to deal with at first, but Club Charity & Unity came through for us and the club is now in a much healthier financial position!”

There are currently (September '08) over 160 registered CASCS in Wales and the number is growing every month.

It was suggested to us at Club Charity that perhaps the CASC idea had limited appeal to clubs who do not own land and therefore cannot obtain rate relief.

The fact is that many clubs are now beginning to take advantage of the tax breaks offered up by claiming Gift Aid on Voluntary donations. There are many income streams open to a club that can attract Gift Aid, which at 25% adds a sizeable amount of cash to any donation.

Clubs would do well to follow the example of Cwmbran Celtic AFC who have now attached a Voluntary Donations facility to the club's web site! The club are now exploring the possibilities of asking for voluntary contributions which will attract Gift Aid and will impact on the level of club fees.

Recent research by Club Charity has revealed that even the smallest CASCS are thousand of pounds worse off because they are not taking advantage of the Tax breaks on offer to CASCS. And yet can you blame them? The UK Government has not exactly flooded the industry with creative ideas over club-related fundraising!

Even the smallest charities and churches know how to take advantage of tax breaks. We suggest that CASCS should catch them up as part of their practical survival strategy!
